Hypertension is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke,
renal failure, and peripheral vascular disease. The importance of
preventing hypertension and controlling blood pressure in patients with
hypertension is well established and is associated with reduced
cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rates. Treatment guidelines should
consider the merits of dietary changes in addition to pharmacologic therapy
in the control of mild hypertension.
